About San Giovanni degli Eremiti

An iconic Arab-Norman church with five distinctive red domes rising above a peaceful cloister garden, built on the site of a mosque using Arab craftsmen.

San Giovanni degli Eremiti, Saint John of the Hermits, is perhaps the single most photographed building in Palermo, and it is easy to understand why. The five bulbous red domes rising above the low whitewashed walls of the church and its adjoining tower create a silhouette that seems to belong simultaneously to North Africa and Norman Sicily, which is precisely the point. Built around 1132 on the orders of King Roger II on the site of a former mosque, the church was constructed using Arab craftsmen who brought with them the forms and techniques of Islamic architecture. The domes, in their rounded, ribless form, are direct descendants of the domes of Fatimid Cairo. The adjacent 12th-century cloister, with its slender paired columns and pointed arches, is a serene and beautiful garden planted with palm trees, orange trees, and flowering plants, one of the most peaceful corners in the entire city.

Did you know? The five domes of San Giovanni are not Christian in form, they are descended from the domes of Fatimid Cairo, built by Muslim craftsmen who continued working for their new Norman patrons.
