About Olympiapark

The green Olympic park of the 'cheerful' 1972 Games, under a famous floating tent roof and a 291-metre tower, a place of soaring optimism, and of remembrance for the massacre that broke it.

The Olympiapark München was built north of the city centre for the 1972 Summer Olympics, on a former airfield whose hills were shaped from the rubble of the bombed city. Conceived as the "cheerful Games," a democratic contrast to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, it is dominated by a sweeping translucent tent roof of cable-net and acrylic glass covering some 74,000 square metres, a landmark of modern architecture by the team of Günter Behnisch, Frei Otto and their engineers, and by the 291-metre Olympic Tower, opened in 1968. The park remains in lively use, drawing about four million visitors a year for concerts, sport and events. It was also the scene of the Munich massacre of 5-6 September 1972, when the Palestinian group Black September killed eleven members of the Israeli team and a West German police officer; a place of remembrance opened in the park in 2017.

Did you know? The park's rolling green hills are not natural: they were piled up from the rubble of Munich's war-bombed buildings and grassed over, so the whole landscape is, quite literally, built on the ruins of the old city.
