About NS-Dokumentationszentrum
Munich's documentation centre on the history of National Socialism, a stark white cube built on the site of the Nazi party's former headquarters, a place of learning and remembrance, not a sight.
The NS-Dokumentationszentrum München (Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism) is a museum and place of learning and remembrance, opened in 2015. It stands on the site of the former "Brown House" (Braunes Haus) on Brienner Straße, which had been the national headquarters of the Nazi party. The centre confronts Munich's history as the city where the party was founded and grew, the self-styled "capital of the movement", and traces the history and consequences of the Nazi dictatorship across a permanent exhibition of about 1,000 square metres. The building, by the architects Georg Scheel Wetzel, is a stark white cube of exposed concrete with six above-ground floors, deliberately austere. It stands on Max-Mannheimer-Platz, named in 2018 for the Holocaust survivor Max Mannheimer, who helped initiate the centre. It is run by the City of Munich as a site of documentation, education and remembrance.
