About Glyptothek
King Ludwig I's temple of ancient sculpture on Königsplatz, home to the Greek warriors of Aegina, first 'restored' with new limbs in Rome, then stripped back to their honest ruins.
The Glyptothek, on the north side of Königsplatz, is a museum of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture built between 1816 and 1830 by the architect Leo von Klenze for Crown Prince, later King, Ludwig I, as part of his plan to make Munich a new Athens. Behind a Greek temple front, fourteen vaulted halls arranged around a courtyard display the king's collection. It is Munich's oldest public museum and is devoted exclusively to ancient sculpture. Its most famous works are the Aegina marbles, the pediment figures from the Temple of Aphaia on Aegina, installed in 1827 after restoration in Rome by Bertel Thorvaldsen; between 1962 and 1966 the museum removed those 19th-century additions to show the fragments as they had survived. Other highlights include the Barberini Faun and the Munich Kouros. The building was bombed in 1944 and reopened in 1972.
Did you know? Among the marbles stands the Munich Kouros, a stiff, faintly smiling nude youth carved around 540 BC, from the very first age of Greek monumental sculpture.
