About Nymphenburg Palace
The Bavarian kings' vast baroque summer palace, begun in 1664 to celebrate the birth of an heir, a gallery of 36 beauties, the birthplace of Ludwig II, and a park of hidden pleasure-houses.
Schloss Nymphenburg, west of the city centre, is the baroque summer palace of the Bavarian royal family. It was begun in 1664 for Electress Henriette Adelaide of Savoy to mark the birth of her son and heir, Max Emanuel, in 1662, the same event that prompted the Theatinerkirche in the city. Successive rulers expanded the original villa into a vast winged palace over the following century, its front stretching several hundred metres along a formal canal. Inside, the two-storey Steinerner Saal carries Rococo frescoes by Johann Baptist Zimmermann, and one apartment holds King Ludwig I's Gallery of Beauties, 36 portraits of women by Joseph Stieler. King Ludwig II was born here in 1845. The extensive park contains formal avenues, canals and several pavilions, among them the Amalienburg, a Rococo hunting lodge by François de Cuvilliés with a celebrated Hall of Mirrors.
Did you know? Hidden in the park is the Amalienburg, a small Rococo hunting lodge whose central round room is lined floor to ceiling with silvered mirrors and pale blue, a jewel by the architect François de Cuvilliés.
