About São Vicente de Fora Monastery

A 16th-century Mannerist monastery housing the royal pantheon of the Braganza dynasty and magnificent 17th-century azulejo panels illustrating the fables of La Fontaine.

The Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, Saint Vincent Outside the Walls, is one of the most architecturally important churches in Lisbon, a late 16th-century Mannerist masterpiece commissioned by King Philip I (Philip II of Spain, who ruled Portugal during the Iberian Union) and designed by the Italian architect Filippo Terzi. The austere, elegant façade with its twin towers and classical detailing represents a complete break from the exuberant Manueline style that dominated Portuguese architecture in the preceding century, introducing the Renaissance rationalism that would define Portuguese architecture for the next 200 years. The monastery cloister is lined with 18th-century blue-and-white azulejo panels, 38 of them each illustrating one of La Fontaine's fables, one of the most remarkable tile programmes in Portugal. In the sacristy and adjacent rooms, the royal pantheon of the Braganza dynasty is maintained: the tombs of most Portuguese monarchs from João IV (died 1656) to Manuel II (died 1932) are kept here. The rooftop terrace offers one of the finest views of Alfama and the Tagus.

Did you know? The cloister contains 38 tile panels, each illustrating one of La Fontaine's fables, one of the most unusual and beautiful tile decorative programmes in Portugal.
