About Estrela Basilica

A magnificent late 18th-century neoclassical basilica with twin towers and a great dome, built by Queen Maria I in fulfilment of a vow, containing the world's largest cork nativity scene.

The Basílica da Estrela, Basilica of the Star, is one of the most beautiful churches in Lisbon, its twin bell towers and magnificent dome visible from across the city. Built between 1779 and 1790, it was commissioned by Queen Maria I, who would later be known as "Maria the Pious", in fulfilment of a vow she made to God: if she were given a son and heir, she would build a church in his honour. The son, José, was duly born in 1761, and construction of the basilica began. Tragically, José died of smallpox in 1788, two years before the basilica was completed, and Maria, already prone to religious melancholy, descended into madness from grief. She died in 1816 and is buried in a side chapel of the basilica she commissioned. The church is a beautiful example of late Portuguese Baroque merging into neoclassicism, its interior cool and serene with white marble and gilded ornament. The church is also known for its extraordinary nativity scene created by sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro, the same artist who made the equestrian statue of King José I in Praça do Comércio, using over 500 terracotta figures and an astonishing quantity of cork.

Did you know? Queen Maria I who built the basilica died in madness in Brazil in 1816, having never recovered from the grief of losing her son José to smallpox in 1788.
