About Gulbenkian Museum
One of the world's great private art collections, spanning 5,000 years from ancient Egypt to Art Nouveau, assembled by oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian and set in beautiful gardens.
The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is widely regarded as one of the finest and most balanced art collections in the world, a treasure house that reflects the extraordinary taste and acquisitive power of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, the Armenian-British oil magnate who made his fortune as a key broker in the development of Middle Eastern oil fields in the early 20th century. Gulbenkian spent his life assembling a personal collection of extraordinary quality and range, from ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian art through Greek and Roman coins, Islamic ceramics, medieval manuscripts, European paintings (including works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Turner, Monet, and Degas), French decorative arts, and culminating in a legendary collection of Art Nouveau jewellery by René Lalique. Unlike most great collections which accumulate through institutional acquisition, every piece in the Gulbenkian was chosen personally by one man with exceptional connoisseurship. Gulbenkian settled in Lisbon during World War II and chose Portugal as his home. When he died in 1955, he left his entire collection to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
Did you know? Calouste Gulbenkian earned the nickname "Mr Five Percent" after retaining a 5% stake in the 1928 deal that opened Iraqi oil fields to Western companies.
