About Convento do Carmo

A hauntingly beautiful 14th-century Gothic convent left roofless by the 1755 earthquake, its skeletal arches open to the sky above the Carmo Archaeological Museum.

The Convento do Carmo is one of the most atmospheric and haunting spaces in all of Lisbon, a vast Gothic church whose roof was destroyed in the earthquake of 1755 and never rebuilt, leaving its elegant pointed arches open to the Lisbon sky. The convent was founded in 1389 by Nuno Álvares Pereira, the great military commander who helped ensure Portuguese independence at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. The church was once the largest Gothic structure in Lisbon; today its roofless nave serves as an open-air archaeological museum filled with sarcophagi, Egyptian mummies, pre-Columbian Peruvian mummies, ancient pottery, fossils, Roman statuary, and a remarkable collection of objects spanning cultures and millennia. The contrast between the Gothic stone tracery of the arches above and the ancient objects displayed below creates a genuinely unique museum experience. The ruined nave is also used for concerts and cultural events. Walking into the Carmo is one of the most surprisingly affecting experiences in Lisbon, the absence of the roof, the sky above, and the silence within conspire to create something that feels more like a meditation than a museum visit.

Did you know? The roof was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and deliberately never rebuilt, the roofless state is considered the monument's defining characteristic.
