About LX Factory
A vast repurposed 19th-century textile complex in Alcântara housing restaurants, shops, studios and a celebrated Sunday market, Lisbon's most creative and atmospheric gathering place beneath the 25 de Abril bridge.
LX Factory occupies a sprawling former industrial complex on the Alcântara waterfront, originally built in the 1840s as the Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos Lisbonense, the Lisbon Spinning and Weaving Company. The complex was one of the largest textile factories in 19th-century Portugal, employing thousands of workers. After decades of decline and partial abandonment following the 1974 revolution, the complex was repurposed from 2008 as a creative hub. Today its enormous brick warehouses and cobbled courtyards host over 200 tenants: independent bookshops, wine bars, restaurants, fashion designers, architects, event spaces, and the city's most dynamic weekly flea and food market, held every Sunday from 10am to 7pm. The combination of industrial heritage, creative energy, and genuine local atmosphere, including the celebrated Ler Devagar bookshop in a former printing hall, has made LX Factory unlike anywhere else in Lisbon.
Did you know? The bookshop Ler Devagar (Reading Slowly) inside LX Factory is consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful bookshops, installed in a former printing hall with the original industrial press still on the floor and books reaching cathedral-height ceilings.
