About Museu de Arte Antiga

Portugal's national gallery of old master paintings, home to Nuno Gonçalves' majestic Saint Vincent Panels polyptych and masterworks from the age of Portugal's global empire, set in a 17th-century palace in Santos.

The Museu de Arte Antiga, the National Museum of Ancient Art, is Portugal's equivalent of the Prado or the Louvre: the national repository of Portuguese and European art from the 12th to the 19th century. Its undisputed masterpiece is the Panels of São Vicente de Fora (the Saint Vincent Panels), also known as the Panels of Nuno Gonçalves, a monumental six-panel polyptych completed around 1470 by the royal court painter Nuno Gonçalves, depicting King Afonso V of Portugal surrounded by over 60 recognisable figures including Henry the Navigator. The museum also holds Hieronymus Bosch's The Temptation of Saint Anthony, one of three versions known to exist, and major works by Dürer, Cranach, and Piero della Francesca. Portuguese art, silver, textiles, furniture, and the famous Namban screens depicting the arrival of Portuguese traders in Japan are also highlights.

Did you know? The Panels of Nuno Gonçalves, depicting King Afonso V surrounded by over 60 identifiable figures including Henry the Navigator, were considered lost for nearly four centuries, hidden in a monastery, before their rediscovery in 1882 shocked the Portuguese art world.
