About Praia do Camilo
A spectacular small cove reached by a dramatic wooden staircase descending through the limestone cliffs, with exceptional water clarity, natural rock arches, and the intimate character of a hidden beach, one of the most beautiful small beaches in the Algarve.
Praia do Camilo is one of the most dramatic small beaches on the Algarve coast, a tiny cove accessible only by a long wooden staircase that descends through the orange limestone cliffs to the beach far below. The staircase is the approach and the drama: it winds down through the rock, offering increasingly spectacular views of the cove and the sea formations around it as you descend. The beach itself is small, perhaps 80 metres wide, but framed by impressive limestone cliffs and rock arches. The water is exceptionally clear, typically calm when the weather is settled, and has a brilliant turquoise colour in bright sunlight. The combination of the dramatic access, the small scale, and the beauty of the rock formations makes Camilo one of the most photographed beaches in the Lagos area, though its limited capacity means it is best visited in the morning or early evening.
Did you know? The wooden staircase at Praia do Camilo descends approximately 60 metres (200 steps) from the clifftop to the beach, it is maintained and periodically replaced by the Lagos municipality, and its distinctive appearance against the orange limestone cliffs has made it one of the most recognisable images of the western Algarve coastline.
