A vast 4-kilometre straight sandy beach north of Lagos town, separated from the town by the Bensafrim river mouth and reaching the Ria de Alvor estuary at its far eastern end, calmer water than the ocean-facing beaches, ideal for families, watersports, and long walks, backed by dunes and pine forest.
Praia da Meia Praia is the largest beach in the Lagos municipality and one of the most extensive in the western Algarve, stretching approximately 4 kilometres from the rocky point north of Lagos town to the Ria de Alvor estuary. Unlike the sheltered coves south of Lagos, Dona Ana, Camilo, and Ponta da Piedade, Meia Praia is a wide, open, gently curving beach backed by low dunes and scattered pine and eucalyptus trees. The beach faces south and south-east, which means it is protected from the prevailing westerly swell that pounds the ocean-facing beaches: the water is typically calmer, making it particularly suitable for families with young children. The beach is a popular destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing, with reliable afternoon winds. A small ferry boat connects the beach to Lagos town across the Bensafrim river mouth during the summer season.
