About Gil Eanes & the Age of Discovery

Lagos was the operational base of Henry the Navigator's Age of Discovery expeditions, Gil Eanes, a Lagos captain, became the first European to sail beyond Cape Bojador in 1434, opening the African coast and launching the era of European global exploration.

Lagos played a central role in one of the most consequential series of events in world history: the Portuguese Age of Discovery. In the early 15th century, Prince Henry the Navigator, operating from his base at Sagres, just 30 kilometres west of Lagos, directed a systematic programme of exploration along the African coast, pushing further south each year. The key breakthrough came in 1434, when Gil Eanes, a captain from Lagos who served Henry, became the first European to sail beyond Cape Bojador (on the coast of what is now Western Sahara). Cape Bojador had been a psychological barrier for European sailors for decades, surrounded by legends of boiling seas and monsters. Eanes's successful rounding of the cape proved that the barrier was imaginary and opened the entire African coast to Portuguese exploration, directly leading to Bartolomeu Dias's rounding of the Cape of Good Hope (1488) and Vasco da Gama's voyage to India (1498).

Did you know? Cape Bojador, the psychological barrier rounded by Gil Eanes in 1434, is not a particularly dramatic geographic feature: it is a low, sandy point on the coast of Western Sahara that generates powerful currents and shoals. Its terror was almost entirely mythological, built up from the stories of sailors who had turned back and the imagination of those who had never tried.
