About Plaza Nueva
The principal public square of central Granada at the junction of the Darro and the main city, the starting point for all excursions to the Alhambra and Albaicín, with the Royal Chancery building and a lively terrace café culture.
Plaza Nueva is the main public square of central Granada, occupying the site where the Darro River emerges from the gorge between the Alhambra and Albaicín hills and historically the junction between the old Moorish city above and the Christian city below. The square's most important building is the Real Chancillería, the Royal Chancery, a Renaissance palace built from 1531 onwards, which served as the high court for the kingdom of Granada and is now home to the High Court of Justice of Andalusia. The square is the starting point for the walk up to the Alhambra, for the walk along the Carrera del Darro into the Albaicín gorge, and for the bus to the Alhambra. It is lively at all hours, with café terraces, street musicians, and a constant flow of visitors.
Did you know? The Darro River actually flows beneath Plaza Nueva, the square was built over the channelled river in the 16th century, and the water continues to flow underground beneath the café terraces and the paving stones on which visitors walk today.
