About El Realejo
The former Jewish quarter of Granada at the foot of the Alhambra hill, a quiet neighbourhood of whitewashed houses and hidden gardens, now home to tapas bars, antique shops, and the characteristic cármenes of the Alhambra slopes.
El Realejo is the former Jewish quarter of Granada, located at the southwestern foot of the Alhambra hill between the city centre and the palace complex. The neighbourhood was home to the substantial Jewish community of Granada before the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492. After the expulsion, the quarter was renamed El Realejo, meaning the Royal Quarter, and gradually assimilated into the broader Christian city. Today it is one of the most pleasant and least touristy neighbourhoods in central Granada, with a characteristic mix of old houses, carmenes, tapas bars, and antique shops. The Campo del Príncipe, a broad plaza at its heart, is one of the finest outdoor café spaces in Granada and is particularly lively on summer evenings.
Did you know? Granada was one of the last Spanish cities to expel its Jewish community in 1492, and unlike other cities, the Jewish quarter of Granada was not destroyed after the expulsion but absorbed into the Christian city, which is why El Realejo still retains its old street plan.
