About Huerta de San Vicente

The summer house of Federico García Lorca, preserved as a museum, a modest 1920s villa surrounded by a garden where the poet wrote Blood Wedding and Yerma while living with his family in the summers before his murder in 1936.

The Huerta de San Vicente is the summer home of Federico García Lorca, Spain's greatest 20th-century poet and playwright, preserved as a museum in the park named after him on the southern edge of Granada. Lorca spent many summers here from 1926 onwards, and the house is where he wrote several of his most important works, including 'Blood Wedding', 'Yerma', and 'Doña Rosita the Spinster'. The house is furnished as it was in Lorca's time: his desk, his upright piano, his family photographs, and the personal objects that made up his daily life. The surrounding park, now heavily urbanised, gives some sense of the agricultural landscape that once surrounded the house. Lorca was arrested on 16 August 1936, just weeks after the start of the Spanish Civil War, and murdered by Nationalist forces two days later. His body was never found.

Did you know? García Lorca's plays, Blood Wedding, Yerma, The House of Bernarda Alba, have been translated into over 50 languages and are performed worldwide more often than any other Spanish dramatic work; they are the most internationally produced plays by a Spanish author in history.
