About La Madraza
The Nasrid royal college built in 1349, the first university in the Iberian Peninsula, its Arabic prayer hall survives with exceptional tilework and plasterwork, concealed behind a later Baroque façade just opposite the Royal Chapel.
La Madraza was the royal college of the Nasrid sultans of Granada, built in 1349 by Sultan Yusuf I as the principal educational institution of the Nasrid kingdom. Historians consider it the first university in the Iberian Peninsula. After the Christian reconquest in 1492, the building was taken over and extensively remodelled, with a new Baroque façade added in the 18th century. Behind this later exterior, the original Nasrid prayer hall survives in remarkable condition: a beautifully decorated room with geometric tilework on the lower walls and carved plasterwork above, representative of 14th-century Nasrid architecture at its finest. The building now forms part of the University of Granada and can be visited during opening hours.
Did you know? La Madraza of Granada, founded in 1349, is considered by historians to be the first university-level institution in the Iberian Peninsula, predating the Christian universities of Salamanca (1218) in its present form, though Salamanca's original founding dates to 1134.
