About Nervi & Coastal Promenade

A romantic eastern suburb of Genoa with a 2km cliff-top promenade past Art Nouveau villas and rocky sea views, and the Parchi di Nervi, Genoa's most beautiful public gardens.

Nervi is one of the most beautiful residential suburbs in Italy, a small coastal town that was absorbed into the municipality of Genoa in 1926 but has retained its own distinct character as a resort of the Genoese bourgeoisie. Its great claim to distinction is the Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi, a 2km cliff-top walking path named after the wife of the Italian unification hero, which runs along the rocky Ligurian coast through a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty: the path is carved directly into the cliff face, giving walkers views of the open sea on one side and a succession of Art Nouveau and Liberty-style villas on the other. The Parchi di Nervi, the public parks of the former Villa Grimaldi and Villa Gropallo estates, are arguably the finest public gardens in Genoa: vast, beautifully maintained, with mature trees, rosaria with over 400 rose varieties, and regular outdoor concerts in summer. Nervi is also home to three important art museums housed in historic villas.

Did you know? The promenade is named for Anita Garibaldi (1821-1849), the Brazilian-born wife of Giuseppe Garibaldi, who fought alongside him in South America and Italy, she took part in the Battle of Sant'Antonio in Uruguay in 1846 while pregnant, and died of exhaustion and illness near Comacchio in 1849 during the retreat from the besieged Roman Republic.
