About Castelletto Viewpoint
A panoramic hilltop neighbourhood above Genoa with a public lift from Piazza Portello, the best free viewpoint over the city, port, and Ligurian Sea.
Castelletto is a hillside residential neighbourhood in the upper part of Genoa's old city, reached from the lower town by a public funicular lift (the Ascensore di Castelletto) that departs from Piazza Portello at the northern edge of the caruggi. The lift emerges at the Spianata di Castelletto, a terrace garden at the top of the hill, and from here the view over Genoa is among the best in the city: the old port spread out below, the Ligurian Sea stretching to the horizon, the dense fabric of the caruggi spreading southward, and the ring of hills that encloses the city to the north and east. The lift itself is an engineering curiosity, an early twentieth-century hydraulic system (1909) in a vertical glass and steel shaft, which still functions on its original mechanism. Castelletto as a neighbourhood is quiet, leafy, and genuinely lived-in, with excellent local trattorias, pharmacies, and small shops serving a predominantly local population. It is the Genoa that tourists rarely see.
Did you know? The Ascensore di Castelletto has been operating since 1909 on its original hydraulic mechanism, making it one of the oldest continuously operating public lifts in Italy.
