About Piazza Banchi & Mercantile Heart

Genoa's ancient commercial heart, a medieval square where merchants once gathered, flanked by the Loggia dei Mercanti and the church of San Pietro in Banchi, connecting the caruggi to the old port.

Piazza Banchi was the commercial centre of Genoa for over six centuries, the square where merchants met to conduct business, exchange currencies, negotiate contracts, and settle debts. The name itself means "benches" or "banks" in Italian, referring to the wooden benches or tables (banchi) on which medieval money changers and bankers conducted their business, and it is from this practice that the English word "bank" ultimately derives. The square is enclosed on one side by the Loggia dei Mercanti, a beautiful Renaissance loggia (1568) where traders sheltered from rain while conducting their negotiations. Opposite is the church of San Pietro in Banchi, a church raised on a platform above a row of shops, because the land was donated by a merchant on condition that the rental income from the shops below would finance the church's construction. This extraordinary arrangement, a church literally funded by its own commercial basement, is unique in Italian religious architecture.

Did you know? The English word "bank" derives from the Italian "banco" (bench/table), the word for the portable counters used by Genoese and other northern Italian money changers in medieval trading squares like Piazza Banchi.
