About Portofino
Italy's most glamorous fishing village, a tiny, exquisite harbour ringed by pastel-coloured houses, luxury yachts, and the forested hill of the Castello Brown, 37 kilometres east of Genoa.
Portofino is one of the most famous and most photographed places in the world, a tiny fishing village on a narrow Ligurian promontory, 37 kilometres east of Genoa, whose perfect natural harbour, brightly painted houses, and backdrop of dark green forest have made it a symbol of Italian coastal beauty and Mediterranean glamour. The village has been attracting wealthy visitors since the nineteenth century, when the British aristocracy discovered it, and by the mid-twentieth century it had become the favourite resort of international film stars, shipping magnates, and European royalty. The harbour is lined with high-end restaurants and boutiques, and the yachts moored in the bay include some of the largest private vessels in the world. The main sights, beyond simply wandering the harbour and the village, are the medieval Castello Brown (now a museum and events venue with spectacular views), the Church of San Giorgio (with a fragment of St George's remains), and the coastal path through the Portofino Regional Nature Reserve. The local specialty is trofie al pesto, fresh pasta with the best basil pesto in the world.
Did you know? Portofino has been so protective of its exclusive character that it has a law limiting the number of visitors allowed in the village at any one time, on peak summer days, access is controlled and visitors may be turned away.
