About Certosa di Galluzzo
A remarkably intact 14th-century Carthusian monastery perched on a hill south of Florence, with Pontormo's frescoes, a monks' pharmacy, and panoramic views over Tuscany.
The Certosa di Galluzzo (also known as the Certosa del Galluzzo or Certosa di Firenze) was founded in 1341 by Niccolò Acciaioli, a wealthy Florentine banker and advisor to the King of Naples. It functioned as a Carthusian monastery for over six centuries and is one of the best-preserved Carthusian complexes in Italy.
The monastery's rooms and cloisters are largely intact: the great cloister with the monks' individual cells, each with its own small garden; the small cloister with its elegant Gothic arcade; the church with Pontormo's extraordinary large-scale fresco cycle of the Passion of Christ (1523–1525), created after the artist sought refuge here during the plague. A Cistercian community replaced the Carthusians in 1958 and continues to make and sell the monastery's famous products, honey, wine, and herbal liqueurs.
Did you know? Pontormo painted his extraordinary Passion frescoes here in 1523-25 while hiding from the plague that was killing thousands in Florence, his three-year stay was one of the most productive periods of his career.
