About Fiesole
The Etruscan and Roman hill town above Florence, with ancient ruins, a Franciscan monastery, and sweeping panoramic views over the Arno valley and the city below.
Fiesole is a small hill town 8 kilometres northeast of Florence, reached by bus in about 25 minutes, that predates Florence by many centuries. An important Etruscan settlement from at least the 7th century BC, Fiesole was conquered by Rome in 283 BC and remained an important Roman town until the rise of Florence made it a suburb.
The archaeological area contains remains of a Roman theatre (1st century BC, seating 3,000 and still used for summer performances), Roman baths, an Etruscan-Roman temple, and sections of the Etruscan city walls. The Archaeological Museum houses finds from the site. On the hilltop, the 11th-century cathedral and the Franciscan convent offer extraordinary panoramic views over the Arno valley. The views of Florence from Fiesole are among the finest and most historically significant in the region, this was where the great Florentine families built their summer villas, and where painters came to sketch the city below.
Did you know? Fiesole was an important Etruscan city before Florence even existed, when the Romans established Florence (Florentia) in 59 BC, Fiesole (Faesulae) had already been a major urban centre for over 600 years.
