About Greve in Chianti

The gateway town of the Chianti Classico wine country, with its distinctive triangular piazza, Verrazzano wine shop, and access to the rolling vineyards and medieval towers of the Strada del Vino.

Greve in Chianti, about 27 kilometres south of Florence, is the principal town of the Chianti Classico wine region and the most convenient base for exploring the Tuscan wine country. Its distinctive triangular Piazza Matteotti, lined with arcaded shops and houses, is one of the most charming market squares in Tuscany, a produce market is held here every Saturday.

The town is closely associated with Giovanni da Verrazzano, the Florentine navigator who was the first European to enter New York Harbor in 1524, a statue of him stands in the piazza and his family's castle is nearby. The Enoteca del Chianti Classico and numerous local wine shops offer tastings of Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and other Tuscan wines. From Greve, the Via Chiantigiana winds through vineyards, olive groves, and medieval tower-villages like Panzano and Radda to the south.
