About Florence Synagogue

The grand Moorish-style synagogue built in 1882 with gilded domes and elaborate Sephardic interiors, standing on the site of the former Jewish Ghetto established by Cosimo I in 1571.

The Great Synagogue of Florence (Tempio Maggiore) is one of the largest and most beautiful synagogues in Europe. Built between 1874 and 1882 in a Spanish-Moorish style by architects Marco Treves, Mariano Falcini, and Vincenzo Micheli, it was conceived as a symbol of Jewish emancipation following the unification of Italy in 1861, when Jews were granted full civil rights.

The building features a striking copper-green dome visible from much of the city, lavish Moorish-style decoration in red and yellow Istrian stone, and an extraordinary Sephardic interior with gilded arches, Moorish stucco work, and mosaic floors. A museum traces the history of the Florentine Jewish community, which dates back at least to the medieval period and includes the history of the Ghetto established by Cosimo I de' Medici in 1571, a walled quarter centred on what is now the Piazza della Repubblica, and the deportations of World War II.

Did you know? The Florence Synagogue was deliberately built in a Moorish style partly because many Florentine Jews were Sephardic, descendants of communities expelled from Spain in 1492, who brought their traditions and liturgy with them.
