The Marktplatz in the heart of Düsseldorf's Altstadt is the city's most historically significant public square. At its centre stands the celebrated bronze equestrian statue of Elector Johann Wilhelm II (known as Jan Wellem), cast in 1711 by Gabriel de Grupello. It is one of the finest Baroque equestrian statues in Germany. Jan Wellem (1658–1716), the Elector Palatine, made Düsseldorf his primary residence and court from 1690 until his death, transforming the city into a major cultural centre of the Holy Roman Empire. He collected Flemish and Dutch paintings, attracted the finest artists to his court, and left an enduring imprint on the city. The Renaissance-style Rathaus (Town Hall) flanks the square to one side, with its distinctive arcade. The Marktplatz is enclosed by historic buildings and used for markets, festivals, and civic events throughout the year.
