About Düsseldorf Carnival

One of Germany's greatest Carnival celebrations, Düsseldorf's tradition rivals Cologne's with its famous Rose Monday parade of biting political floats, giant confetti cannons, and half a million revellers.

Düsseldorf Carnival is one of the great Rhineland Carnival celebrations, the third largest in Germany after Cologne and Mainz, but widely considered the most politically pointed. The Düsseldorf Rose Monday parade (Rosenmontagszug), held on the Monday before Ash Wednesday, has a tradition going back to 1825 and is famous across Germany for its large, elaborate, and frequently savage satirical floats caricaturing politicians, world leaders, and current events. The figures on the Düsseldorf floats are often ten metres tall, grotesquely exaggerated caricatures that pull no punches in their political commentary. The main float-builder for decades was Jacques Tilly, whose floats have attracted international media attention for their provocative content. Beyond the parade, the carnival season in Düsseldorf lasts several weeks, centred on the Altstadt, with street parties, themed balls, and the traditional crying of "Helau!" as a greeting.
