About Neandertal & Neanderthal Museum
The Neandertal valley 15km east of Düsseldorf, where the bones of Neanderthal man were discovered in 1856, and home to the excellent Neanderthal Museum exploring 300,000 years of human evolution.
The Neandertal (Neanderthal) is a small gorge in the Düssel river valley, 15 kilometres east of Düsseldorf, which gave its name to Neanderthal man, one of the most important discoveries in the history of human evolution. In 1856, workers quarrying limestone in the gorge discovered unusual bones that were later identified as the remains of an archaic human, the first recognised specimen of Homo neanderthalensis, predating Homo sapiens by hundreds of thousands of years. The discovery prompted a revolution in understanding human prehistory. Today, the valley is the site of the Neanderthal Museum (1996), one of the best museums of human evolution in Europe, which tells the story of 300,000 years of Neanderthal life and uses the 1856 discovery as a starting point for exploring human evolution from its earliest origins to the present.
Did you know? Neanderthal man was discovered in 1856, three years before Darwin published On the Origin of Species, making the discovery impossible to properly understand at the time with available scientific knowledge.
