About Mandralisca Museum
A small but extraordinary museum housing Antonello da Messina's enigmatic 'Portrait of an Unknown Sailor', one of the greatest Renaissance portraits in Italy, whose subject's half-smile has been compared to the Mona Lisa.
The Museo Mandralisca in Cefalù is a private collection assembled by the 19th-century naturalist and art collector Enrico Pirajno, Baron of Mandralisca, and donated to the city on his death in 1864. The museum occupies the upper floors of the Palazzo Mandralisca on the Via Mandralisca, a short walk from the cathedral. Its archaeological collection is interesting, Greek painted vases, coins, bronzes, but the reason most visitors come is to see a single painting: Antonello da Messina's 'Portrait of an Unknown Man' (also known as the Portrait of an Unknown Sailor), painted around 1465–1472. The painting shows a young man in three-quarter profile with an expression of intelligent, slightly sardonic amusement, a half-smile that has been compared to the Mona Lisa for its psychological ambiguity and power.
Did you know? The Baron of Mandralisca purchased the Antonello portrait from a pharmacy in Lipari, one of the Aeolian Islands, in the 1850s, where it was being used as a cabinet door. He recognised it as a work of exceptional quality and brought it to Cefalù. The painting had apparently been in the pharmacy for generations without anyone recognising its significance.
