About Temple of Diana on La Rocca
A mysterious megalithic sanctuary at the summit of La Rocca, built with Cyclopean stone walls long before the Greeks arrived in Sicily, its origins and original function remain subjects of scholarly debate, adding to its atmosphere of ancient mystery.
The structure called the Temple of Diana on the summit of La Rocca is one of the most mysterious ancient monuments in Sicily. Built of enormous stone blocks in the Cyclopean dry-stone technique used in Bronze Age construction across the eastern Mediterranean, the structure consists of a rectangular chamber with a stone-lined water basin fed by a natural spring. Its walls are of archaic construction, predating Greek colonisation of Sicily and possibly dating to as early as the 9th century BC. It is not clear whether the structure was originally a temple, a cistern, or a combined water sanctuary, it may have been sacred to local pre-Greek Sicilian (Siculan) deities. The Romans associated it with Diana (Artemis) and it was still in use as a cult site into Roman times.
Did you know? The stone basin at the Temple of Diana is carved directly into the bedrock and fed by a natural spring. In ancient religious practice across the Mediterranean, a spring on a high point, visible from the sea, inaccessible to ordinary mortals, was considered a place where the divine and human worlds met.
