About Corso Ruggero

The ancient main street of Cefalù, named for Roger II, following the line of the original Greek-Roman cardo through the medieval town, alive with shops, cafés, and the evening passeggiata, ending at the Porta di Terra arch.

Corso Ruggero is the main street of medieval Cefalù, the ancient spine of the town that runs from the Piazza del Duomo (the Cathedral square) through the historic centre to the Porta di Terra, the surviving medieval gate at the landward edge of the old town. The street follows the line of the ancient Greek and Roman cardo, the main north-south road of classical urban planning, and has been the commercial and social artery of the town since ancient times. Today it is pedestrianised, lined with shops, restaurants, and ice cream parlours, and in the evening becomes the scene of the classic Sicilian passeggiata: the daily ritual stroll in which the whole town circulates, dressed in its best, for conversation and display.

Did you know? The street is named 'Corso Ruggero' in honour of Roger II of Sicily (1095–1154), the Norman king who founded the cathedral and transformed Cefalù from a minor town into a royal foundation. Roger is considered one of the most enlightened rulers of medieval Europe: literate in Arabic, Greek, and Latin, patron of science and the arts.
