About La Rocca
The great 270-metre limestone crag that towers over Cefalù, crowned with Norman fortifications and an ancient Temple of Diana, a steep but rewarding hike with panoramic views of the coast and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
La Rocca is the defining geographical feature of Cefalù, a massive limestone crag that rises 270 metres directly from the sea behind the medieval town, so steep and imposing that the town appears to cling to its base. The crag has been occupied since prehistoric times: at the summit are the remains of a Temple of Diana, an ancient sanctuary whose megalithic walls and water basin predate Greek colonisation of Sicily. The Norman kings later built defensive walls and fortifications around the summit. Today a well-marked path climbs steeply from the town to the summit in about 45 minutes, offering progressively more spectacular views across the Tyrrhenian Sea, the coastline, and the town below. The view of Cefalù Cathedral from above is one of the finest in Sicily.
Did you know? La Rocca was used as a defensive stronghold from prehistoric times through the Norman period. During the Arab-Byzantine wars of the 9th century AD, when the Arab Aghlabid dynasty was conquering Sicily, the population of ancient Cefalù retreated to the summit of La Rocca for safety, effectively living on the cliff top for decades.
