Taormina, perched on a rocky terrace 250 metres above the Ionian Sea on the east coast of Sicily between Catania and Messina, is arguably the most dramatically situated town in the Mediterranean, and the view from its ancient Greek theatre, with the sea far below and Etna rising to the north, is one of the great views of the world. From Catania, Taormina is accessible by train (about 45 minutes to Taormina-Giardini station, then a bus up the hill) or by car (about an hour). The Teatro Greco, built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC and later expanded by the Romans, is among the best-preserved ancient theatres in the world and is still used for summer performances. The town itself is a perfectly preserved medieval and Baroque hill town, its main street (Corso Umberto I) one of the most elegant promenades in Sicily.
