About Porta Uzeda & Port Area
The Baroque city gate and old port of Catania, opening to the Ionian Sea, where fishermen and the historic waterfront cafés define the seafront character of the city.
Porta Uzeda, the Baroque city gate at the southern end of Piazza del Duomo, was built in 1696 as part of the post-earthquake rebuilding and serves as the principal passage between the historic centre and the port area. Through the gate, the Via Dusmet leads down to the old port, where fishing boats still land their catch in the early morning, the supply chain that feeds La Pescheria runs directly from here. The area around the port has some of the oldest surviving architecture in Catania: the church of Sant'Agata la Veterana (the 'old church'), the remains of the Roman harbour walls, and the characteristic 18th-century buildings of the Via Dusmet. The sea view from the port area, the Ionian stretching south toward Syracuse, Etna rising behind you, is the characteristic panorama of Catania.
Did you know? The Porta Uzeda was built in 1696, just three years after the 1693 earthquake, demonstrating how quickly Catania's citizens and rulers moved to rebuild their devastated city.
