About Piazza Stesicoro

Catania's liveliest social square, built directly over the buried Roman amphitheatre, the northern hub of the passeggiata on Via Etnea and the heart of student and nightlife culture.

Piazza Stesicoro is Catania's most socially active piazza, the northern terminus of the Via Etnea and the point where the university, the night-life district, and the daily street life of the city converge. Named after the ancient Greek lyric poet Stesichorus, who according to tradition was born in Catania, the piazza is notable for the presence of the Roman amphitheatre walls at its northern edge, the black curved wall of lava stone that is all that is visible of a structure which once extended beneath most of this part of the city. The piazza is surrounded by cafés, bars, gelaterie, and the offices and departments of the University of Catania, the student population fills it from morning until late at night. The statue of Sant'Agata at the southern end of the piazza reminds everyone of the ultimate Catanian devotion.

Did you know? The square is named after Stesichorus, a 6th century BC Greek lyric poet claimed by Catania as a native son, his poem retracting the story of Helen of Troy is one of the most famous works of ancient Greek poetry.
