About Benedictine Monastery of San Nicolò
The second largest Benedictine monastery in Europe (after Mafra in Portugal), a monumental complex rebuilt in Baroque splendour after the 1693 earthquake, now part of the University of Catania.
The Benedictine monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena is the second largest Benedictine monastic complex in Europe (after the monastery of Mafra in Portugal), a sprawling collection of churches, cloisters, gardens, libraries, and residential buildings that covers nearly six hectares in the heart of Catania. The monastery was founded in the late 16th century but was completely rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake in a grand Baroque style whose scale and ambition reflect the enormous wealth and prestige of the Catanian Benedictine community. The main church, the Basilica di San Nicolò all'Arena, has the largest interior volume of any church in Sicily; the two towers of its incomplete facade are one of Catania's most distinctive landmarks. Today the complex houses the Faculty of Letters of the University of Catania, and visitors can explore the magnificent cloisters, the library with its frescoed ceilings, and the church interior.
Did you know? The monastery's facade was never finished, the two towers are complete but the connecting central section was never built, leaving one of the most dramatic architectural incompletions in Baroque Italy.
