About Roman Amphitheatre

The largest Roman amphitheatre in Sicily, dating to the 2nd century AD, its curved walls partially visible beneath the Baroque Piazza Stesicoro.

Catania's Roman amphitheatre, dating to the 2nd century AD, was one of the largest in the Roman Empire: it could hold approximately 15,000 spectators, making it the largest Roman amphitheatre in Sicily. Most of the building now lies beneath the modern Piazza Stesicoro, visible only as the curved wall of black lava stone that protrudes above ground level at the northern edge of the square. The accessible portion of the underground ruins can be entered from a dedicated entrance, revealing the vaulted underground chambers and passages that served as the service infrastructure of the Roman entertainment complex. The colossal scale of what lies beneath the city is suggested by the curvature of the walls visible above ground: you are looking at a fragment of a structure that extended over most of the northern historic centre.

Did you know? Only about 20% of the Roman amphitheatre is accessible or visible, the remaining 80% lies buried beneath Catania's Baroque streets and buildings, its outer ellipse measuring roughly 125 by 105 metres.
