Piazza del Duomo is the civic and ceremonial heart of Catania, redesigned as a unified Baroque composition by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini after the devastating earthquake of 1693. The piazza is flanked by the Cathedral on the east, the Palazzo del Municipio on the west, the Palazzo dell'Elefante, and the Porta Uzeda. At its centre stands the famous elephant fountain. In the southern corner, the Fontana dell'Amenano reveals the underground river Amenano, which flows beneath the historic centre, the clear water bubbling up from the fountain speaks of the ancient rivers that once shaped this land. Beneath the piazza itself, archaeological excavations have uncovered layers of Roman, Greek, and prehistoric remains, demonstrating that this has been a gathering place for at least two and a half thousand years.
