About Bellini Museum
The birthplace of composer Vincenzo Bellini, preserved as a museum displaying his manuscripts, original piano, and personal memorabilia in the family home where he was born.
The Museo Civico Belliniano is housed in the building at Piazza San Francesco d'Assisi 3, where Vincenzo Bellini was born on 3 November 1801 and where he spent his early childhood. The museum contains an important collection of personal memorabilia and musical documents: original manuscript scores in Bellini's hand, letters to and from musical associates and patrons, portraits, costumes from early productions of his operas, and his personal piano. Seeing the manuscripts, the actual pages on which Bellini wrote the notes of Norma and the other operas, in his neat, surprisingly un-dramatic hand, has a particular intimacy that recordings and performances cannot provide. The building also gives a vivid sense of the prosperous but not lavish Catanian bourgeois household of the early 19th century.
Did you know? Bellini's remains were buried in Paris's Père Lachaise cemetery (near Chopin's grave) after his 1835 death, then returned to Catania Cathedral with great ceremony in 1876.
