About Acireale

A delightful hilltop Baroque town north of Catania, famous for the most beautiful carnival in Sicily and a thermal spa tradition dating back to antiquity.

Acireale, perched on a volcanic terrace above the Ionian Sea twelve kilometres north of Catania, is one of the most delightful of the Val di Noto Baroque towns, smaller and less visited than Catania, but with an exceptionally beautiful historic centre of Baroque churches, palaces, and piazzas in the same Val di Noto late-Baroque tradition recognised by UNESCO in 2002 (though Acireale itself is not among the eight inscribed towns). The town is famous for two things: its Carnival, held every February, which is considered the most beautiful in Sicily and one of the most spectacular in Italy, with enormous allegorical floats decorated with papier-mâché figures of extraordinary artistry. And its thermal baths: sulphurous springs on the hillside below the town have been used since Roman times for their therapeutic properties, and the tradition continues in modern spa facilities.

Did you know? The Acireale Carnival (February) is widely considered the most beautiful in Sicily, the papier-mâché floats take up to a year to build and can reach 12 metres in height.
