About Saint Salvator's Cathedral

The oldest parish church in Bruges, dating back to the 12th century, now the city's cathedral, known for its impressive Romanesque-Gothic tower and rich collection of Flemish tapestries and paintings.

Saint Salvator's Cathedral (Sint-Salvatorskathedraal) is the oldest parish church in Bruges, with origins in the 10th century and substantial construction from the 12th century onward. It became the city's cathedral in 1834, after the original Cathedral of Saint Donatian on Burg Square was demolished during the French Revolutionary period. The church's most striking external feature is its massive tower, which is Romanesque at its base, Gothic in its upper stages, and topped by a distinctive 19th-century neo-Romanesque crown. Inside, the cathedral contains an outstanding collection of 15th and 16th-century Flemish paintings, including works by Dirk Bouts, and a remarkable series of eight Brussels tapestries depicting the life of the Roman general Silvanus. The Treasury Museum displays important medieval and Renaissance objects.
