About Town Hall of Bruges
The oldest Gothic town hall in the Benelux, completed in 1376, with a gilded facade of pointed niches and a magnificent vaulted Gothic Hall inside.
The Town Hall of Bruges (Stadhuis van Brugge) on Burg Square is the oldest Gothic town hall in the Benelux countries and one of the most important Gothic civic buildings in the whole of northern Europe. Begun around 1376 and completed by the early 15th century, its sandy-stone facade features ranks of pointed niches that once held gilded polychrome statues of the counts of Flanders and the dukes of Burgundy. The interior's centrepiece is the magnificent Gothic Hall on the first floor: a large meeting room with a breathtaking pointed vault ceiling, adorned in the late 19th century with painted panels depicting key events in the history of Bruges and Flanders. The museum also displays historic maps, charters, and civic objects.
Did you know? The Town Hall was completed in 1376, making it older than the famous Gothic town halls of Brussels (1402), Leuven (1448), and Ghent (1482).
