About Begijnhof
A serene UNESCO World Heritage beguinage founded in 1245, with white-washed houses around a tree-lined green, today inhabited by Benedictine nuns.
The Begijnhof (Ten Wijngaarde) is one of the most beautifully preserved medieval enclosures in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 1245, it was originally a community for beguines, devout laywomen who lived in religious communities without taking permanent vows, typically supporting themselves through weaving, lacemaking, or nursing. The community's white-washed houses, each with a tiny garden, surround a large central courtyard shaded by ancient elm trees. In spring, the courtyard is carpeted with daffodils. The beguines died out as a community in the 20th century, and since 1927 the Begijnhof has been inhabited by Benedictine nuns who continue to maintain its contemplative character. Visitors may enter freely but are asked to keep silence out of respect.
Did you know? Beguines were laywoman who lived in religious communities without permanent vows, an unusual level of independence for medieval women, who could leave the community and marry if they chose.
