About Kantcentrum (Lace Centre)
The living home of Bruges's UNESCO-recognised bobbin lace tradition, with live demonstrations by skilled lacemakers and a museum tracing the city's centuries-old craft heritage.
The Kantcentrum (Lace Centre) is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Bruges's famous bobbin lace tradition, which was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2019. Housed in a 19th-century building in the Balstraat in the northeast quarter of the old city, the centre offers daily live demonstrations of bobbin lace-making, a highly skilled craft in which dozens of bobbins are manipulated simultaneously to create intricate patterns of thread. The museum section explains the history of lace in Bruges from the 16th century, when it became the dominant cottage industry of the city, through the late 19th century when machine lace began to replace handcraft. The centre also offers lace-making classes for visitors who want to try the craft themselves.
Did you know? At its peak in the 17th century, it is estimated that more than 10,000 women in Bruges and the surrounding region were employed in the lace trade.
