About Berlin Zoological Garden
Germany's oldest zoo, founded in 1844 in the western Tiergarten, home to over 20,000 animals and 1,500 species, including the famous giant panda enclosure, and adjacent to the historic aquarium and the Zoo Station.
The Zoologischer Garten Berlin, Berlin Zoological Garden, is Germany's oldest and most visited zoo, founded in 1844 on the western edge of the Tiergarten. It covers 35 hectares and is home to over 20,000 animals representing 1,500 species, making it one of the most species-diverse zoos in the world. The zoo has a long history of celebrity animal residents: Knautschke the hippo survived the Battle of Berlin in 1945 and lived until 1988; Knut the polar bear became a global sensation in 2007. The adjacent Aquarium Berlin is one of Germany's finest, with fish, amphibians, and insects as well as a famous Crocodile Hall. Immediately adjacent to the zoo is the Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten, Zoo Station, a major railway and subway hub that served as West Berlin's main train station during the Cold War, and which became internationally known through the 1981 film 'Christiane F.' about heroin addiction in West Berlin.
Did you know? Of the approximately 3,715 animals at Berlin Zoo before World War II, only 91 survived the Battle of Berlin in 1945, the zoo was nearly completely destroyed by Allied bombing and Soviet artillery.
