The Regierungsviertel, Government Quarter, is the district in central Berlin where Germany's federal government is concentrated, centred on the Reichstag and extending westward along the Spree bend. After reunification, Berlin replaced Bonn as the capital and the government quarter was rebuilt almost from scratch between the mid-1990s and early 2000s, creating a remarkable ensemble of contemporary democratic architecture. The Federal Chancellery, Bundeskanzleramt, designed by Axel Schultes and Charlotte Frank and opened in 2001, is a massive white modernist structure nicknamed the 'Washing Machine' by Berliners. The Paul-Löbe-Haus and the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus house parliamentary offices and committees, connected by a pedestrian bridge across the Spree that creates a symbolic link between East and West Berlin. Schloss Bellevue, the official residence of the Federal President, stands on the northern edge of the Tiergarten nearby. The entire ensemble is open for walking and cycling.
