About Sanssouci Palace (Potsdam)
Frederick the Great's summer retreat in Potsdam, a rococo masterpiece crowning terraced vineyards, surrounded by a vast park of palaces and gardens that form a UNESCO World Heritage Site just 30 minutes from central Berlin.
Sanssouci Palace is the most celebrated royal residence in Germany outside Bavaria, a jewel of rococo architecture and garden design that served as the summer palace and private retreat of Frederick the Great (Friedrich II) of Prussia from 1747 until his death in 1786. The name means 'without a care' in French, and the palace was intended as a place of leisure, philosophical reflection, and artistic enjoyment for the philosopher-king. The one-storey palace sits atop six terraces of south-facing vineyard, designed to allow Frederick to cultivate exotic fruits. The surrounding park, the Park Sanssouci, extends for 290 hectares and contains several other palaces including the New Palace (Neues Palais), the Orangery Palace, and the Chinese House. The entire ensemble of palaces and parks in Potsdam and Berlin, including Park Sanssouci, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 and extended in subsequent years. Sanssouci is a 30-minute train ride from central Berlin.
Did you know? Frederick the Great personally designed the terraced vineyards at Sanssouci so he could grow figs, cherries, and exotic fruits at the same latitude as London, warmed by the south-facing slope and heated glass niches between the vines.
