About Nikolaiviertel

Berlin's oldest neighbourhood, reconstructed by East Germany for the city's 750th anniversary in 1987, centred on the twin-towered St Nicholas Church and the Knoblauchhaus, Berlin's only surviving Biedermeier townhouse.

The Nikolaiviertel, St Nicholas Quarter, is Berlin's oldest surviving neighbourhood, situated between the Rathausstrasse and the Spree River in central Berlin. The original medieval quarter grew up around the twin-towered St Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche), the oldest preserved building in Berlin, dating from the early 13th century. The entire area was destroyed by Allied bombing and the Battle of Berlin in 1945, and lay in ruins for decades in East Berlin. In 1987, to mark the 750th anniversary of the city's founding, the GDR undertook a comprehensive reconstruction of the quarter in a historicising architectural style, rebuilding the street pattern and facades of the original medieval district in prefabricated concrete, an oddly fascinating mixture of genuine medieval street plan and GDR-era construction techniques. The Nikolaikirche is now a museum. The Knoblauchhaus, the only building in the quarter that survived the war, is Berlin's only intact Biedermeier townhouse. The area is pleasant for walking with riverside cafes and restaurants.

Did you know? The Nikolaikirche was the first church built in Berlin in the 13th century, its twin towers, restored to their medieval form in 1878, are the oldest architectural elements still standing in the city.
