About Neues Museum

The Neues Museum, completed in 1855 and devastated by Allied bombing in 1943, lay in ruin for over 50 years before British architect David Chipperfield undertook its celebrated restoration, reopened in 2009. Chipperfield's approach was revolutionary: rather than reconstructing what had been lost, he preserved the ruins, bullet holes, blast damage, missing floors, and inserted new materials alongside the old to create a dialogue between destruction and renewal. The result is one of the most thoughtful and moving acts of architectural restoration of the 20th century. The museum's star exhibit is the limestone bust of Queen Nefertiti, created around 1345 BC by the sculptor Thutmose and discovered in 1912 in his workshop in Amarna, Egypt. The bust's perfect preservation, almond eyes with one pupil missing, and extraordinary delicacy make it one of the most captivating objects in any museum. Egypt has repeatedly requested its return; Germany has consistently refused.
